A couple weeks ago we headed to Williamsburg to the first large-scale public project by New York artist Kara Walker, a "Subtlety or the Marvelous Sugar Baby", located in Brooklyn’s former Domino Sugar Factory.
As soon as you walk in you are greeted by the rusted walls and ceilings dripping with molasses. The sculptures of children made mostly from sugar and molasses "an Homage to the unpaid and overworked Artisans who have refined our Sweet tastes from the cane fields to the Kitchens of the New World on the Occasion of the demolition of the Domino Sugar Refining Plant."
The main character in the exhibit is a giant 35 feet tall sphinx-like sculpture made from 330 blocks of styrofoam coated in 40 tons of sugar (donated by Domino). Truly impressive!
The factory will soon be completely demolished. What a way to say good-bye to the Domino Sugar Factory and its history!
“A Subtlety or The Marvelous Sugar Baby” runs through July 6 at the former Domino Sugar factory, 317 Kent Avenue at South 1st Street, Williamsburg, Brooklyn
