A few days ago Brian, Duo and I went to the Thursday's Girl exhibit at the Jonathan Levine Gallery. A solo exhibition of the artist Josh Agle, better known as Shag, an American artist born in 1962 and currently residing in Los Angeles.
He began as an illustrator but his original paintings soon caught the attention of galleries and collectors. He paints in a mid-century scenery of people in fun, lavish settings. He describes each painting as having a story without giving any details as to leaving the viewers with their own perceptions.
This exhibit, Thursday's Girl, is about the young naive girl that comes to the city looking for big dreams. The painting below, The Silver Years, is my favorite from this show. It's based on Andy Warhol's Factory. You can see Andy Warhol standing in the far right while everyone else is enjoying the party.
A fun factor about this exhibit was that instead of a description on the side, each painting had a QR bar code where when scanned it and gave you a brief story about the painting. Very cool!
The painting above said: Who were all those weirdos? At least she found Andy's cat in the corner. Samuel Mc Whiskers was far more interesting than anyone else at the factory.
This was a great and fun exhibit. I've been a Shag fan for many years now and it's always great to see his work. His paintings will be shown until May 4 so run if you're in NYC!
Hope you enjoyed our visit to Shag's NYC exhibit!
